RAF air traffic controller Careena Byth is hoping she has a head for heights after volunteering to take part in a bungee jump for our Help for Heroes Appeal.

Based at Lyneham, Senior Aircraftman Byth is also planning a number of fundraising activities this year and is backing our appeal after a friend was cared for at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham.

She said: “A friend of mine had an injury when he was out in Afghanistan and he was cared for at Selly Oak Hospital in Birmingham and helped by Help for Heroes so it is a charity close to my heart. I work in air traffic control at RAF Lyneham so I see their work first hand and just how much they help people.”

Mrs Byth, 24, will be taking part in the sponsored 200ft bungee jump at the Town Local pub in Wootton Bassett on May 20 and hopes to raise as much money as possible for our appeal.

She said: “I’m very nervous – I’ve never done a bungee jump before but I have done a few adrenalin things in the past.”

Mrs Byth is also helping to organise a party, called the Bash for Cash, at Lyneham on June 4. She is hoping to sell between 150 and 200 tickets for the evening of live music and entertainment through which they hope to raise around £1,000.

Mrs Byth is appealing for caterers to come forward who can help out the organisers, as so far they haven’t been able to find any which they can afford.

She said: “We are struggling to find basic caterers.

“It is for charity and we only want to do basic buffet food.”

Any caterers who can help or anyone who would like to sponsor Mrs Byth’s bungee jump should e-mail her at careenabyth@yahoo.co.uk A Sunday lunch at Poulshot Village Hall at the weekend raised a remarkable £1,700 for Help for Heroes.

Mandy Housby, a member of the organising committee, said: “It was a fantastic event and very well attended. People were very generous resulting in the wonderful sum we raised.”

As well as a cold buffet there was a raffle and auction. Most of the food and prizes were donated.
