REAL ale enthusiasts were able to sample specialist beers from all over the country at the second Devizes Beer Festival.

The all-day festival at the Wharf on Saturday, July 8, attracted more than 1,000 drinkers.

Organiser Don Jones, chairman of Devizes Campaign for Real Ale, said: It was an unmitigated success. I have never seen so many people drinking. There was no trouble and no drunkenness.

We sold about 450 gallons of beer and the average consumption was three and a half pints. We also had some non drinkers and a lot of people brought their families.

There were 37 different ales on offer and the punters' choice of champion ale was Red Macgregor, which is brewed on the Orkney Islands.

Magicians entertained the children and there was live music.

Superfrets, made up of sixth formers from Wootton Bassett School, the Devizes Boys' Brigade Old Boys' Band and Chippenham-based Against the Grain were among the bands.
