MUSIC lovers in Sherston sang and played instruments for 24 hours to raise more than £2,100 to buy a portable, electric piano for the village.

Piano teacher, Joy Smith, who helped organise the event, said: It went fantastically well. We had so much fun and it really pulled the community togther.

She said Sherston musicians had wanted to raise funds to buy a community piano. They were often forced to borrow a piano for musical events in the village.

An £800 donation has already been received from the Malmesbury Carnival Committee.

The marathon started at 1.30pm on Friday, June 30, with a musical workshop at Sherston Primary School, and continued through the night with a summer concert by the popular Malmesbury Singers, and performances from local residents.

Parish council chairman Trevor Moody took up the musical baton at 6am on Saturday morning by singing to his cows during milking, and performances by residents continued again in the village hall.

The marathon ended with the ringing of the bells at Sherston Church at 1.30pm on Saturday.
