MOTORISTS and traders in Malmesbury are complaining about the disruption caused by on-going roadworks in the High Street but residents have adopted a more philosophical approach.

Despite having to suffer dug-up pavements, barricades and noise by their front doors, High Street residents say they will put up with the inconvenience in the hope that the new traffic calming measures will make it safer for everyone.

Wiltshire County Council and North Wiltshire District Council are narrowing the road at the bottom of the High Street, near St John's Bridge, to slow cars entering and leaving the town to 20mph.

The roadworks began on April 10, and are scheduled to be completed by late July.

High Street traders complained recently their businesses were suffering because the roadworks, delays and speed humps throughout the town were discouraging shoppers.

But resident Sally Bacon, who has lived at the bottom end of the High Street for 30 years said: The work is a nuisance and the noise disturbs me hugely, but I suppose we have to live with it for a while because hopefully it will result in the traffic slowing down. "

Another resident, Andrea Kaye, who has lived in the High Street for five years, said: I'm glad it's being done because the traffic should be slowed down, but it would be nice to eventually have some peace and quiet again.
