PUPILS at Malmesbury Primary School delighted in throwing wet sponges at their headteacher, Jeff Staton, as he stood in stocks at the school fete.

The fete, organised by the Malmesbury Primary School Association, raised more than £1,800 towards new staging.

Mr Staton said: It wasn't a terrible ordeal. It was good fun. The children really appreciated the opportunity to throw wet sponges at their headteacher. They found it hilarious.

I thought the fete was a great success. It was good to see so many of our pupils and ex-pupils with their parents, and grandparents. We felt it generated a good community spirit. The support was greatly appreciated.

Fete attractions included go-karts, a coconut shy, a vintage motor bike display, a Tae Kwon Do demonstration, a bouncy castle, a hog roast and a flywall sponsored by the Malmesbury Leisure Centre's activity zone.

Jane Wright, association chairman, said: We were delighted with the number of people who came through the gates. We couldn't get them to leave. The fete was supposed to finish at 2pm, and we had to push them out the gates at 3.30pm.
