A NEW internet website is carrying photographs of Dean's Garages in Marlborough and Froxfield, asking if they sell the dearest petrol in the UK.

At the end of June, the price of a litre of four star was put up to £1.07 at the Marlborough garage, but was changed back to £1.04.

Drivers using the Swindon to Salisbury road pass only one garage in Marlborough, Dean's in London Road, where a 40-litre tankful of four star costs £41.60 compared with £35.16 eight miles away at Chiseldon's Esso Station.

Owner Zubar Dean was not available yesterday but a man who claimed to be the manager said: That's what it costs us because we buy on the spot market and it goes up and down each day.

We are making a couple of pence per litre but by the time you take out the credit card charges that is hardly anything.

We provide a service to the community and if the service was not there there would be no facilities on the main road through the town.

If we could sell our petrol any cheaper then we would.
