A CELTIC-STYLE stone cross with 20 carved panels showing Christian events, local history, and symbols of the four seasons, will be put up in St John's churchyard, in Devizes, to mark the Millennium.

The nine foot high design, by Eric Stanford of Snails Lane, will be in Portland stone and incorporates the Nativity on the ground level.

The second level depicts the corn dealers in the Corn Exchange, based on the film Far from the Madding Crowd, which was partly shot in Devizes.

Mr Stanford and Easterton sculptor Judy Boyt designed more than ten schemes, but it was the cross originally suggested by Coun Ray Taylor that was finally chosen.

The cross offers unlimited ideas because of the number of different panels, Mr Stanford said.

Devizes Town Council has committed £5,000 to the project, but a total of £12,500 is needed.

The Millennium group is hoping people will sponsor panels, or the years represented on the cross.

The stone, which cost £3,000 will arrive in August and will take ten months to carve. It will be unveiled at the Devizes Festival in 2001.
