THREE multi-million pound projects which could change the face of Swindon's town centre have been unveiled.

New shops and a multi-storey car park could be created by redeveloping the Bhs store in The Parade.

The Post Office has also revealed that it plans to close its Theatre Square branch and redevelop its Fleming Way outlet as part of a major residential and commercial development in Fleming Way.

And a second Wetherspoon pub is set to be opened in the town at the site of the former Crisco Carpets in Fleet Street.

Royal and Sun Alliance, which owns the Bhs building, wants to create seven new shops and a new 471-space multi-storey car park by rebuilding the store.

R&SA says the scheme would greatly enhance the shopping centre but warned it could be scrapped if plans to expand the rival BAA McArthur Glen Outlet Village with a new six-screen cinema, fitness centre and restaurants are approved.

Deepan Khiroya, assistant fund manager at R&SA, said: Should the Outlet Village application be granted, the town centre would undoubtedly suffer in terms of vitality and viability.

But BAA McArthur Glen's project director, Mark Bradbury, said its scheme has had outline planning permission since 1989 and the current application is simply to confirm details.

Meanwhile, Chipping Sodbury-based developer Beaufort plans to build a multi-million pound residential and commercial complex which would involve expanding the post office at Fleming Way.

It would then become the main town centre branch and the Theatre Square Post Office would close.

Post Office spokeswoman Pam Johns said: We decided to expand the Fleming Way branch because the room for redevelopment is not there at Theatre Square.

In the third scheme, pub chain Wetherspoon is to spend more than £1 million developing a new pub at the empty Crisco Carpets shop in Fleet Street. Thirty jobs will be created by the venture.
