PUPILS at St Mary's Infants School in Marlborough are working on a huge Millennium mosaic.

It will eventually be mounted outside the school entrance.

Head teacher Sandra Jones said an Ofsted report suggested there should be something outside the building to announce its status as a Church of England school.

We wanted to find an innovative way to actually do that other than to commission an artist, she said. So we decided to tap our own little artists and to ask the community to help us.

All 190 children were invited to submit a drawing of how they thought the new school sign should look and were told it had to incorporate the figure of St Mary.

The best ideas from a number of them have incorporated into the final design.

The Marlborough Tile Company, has given a discount on the multi-coloured mosaic tiles which the children and staff are busy sticking on a 2400mm by 1200mm board.
