SWINDON residents swapped junk in an attempt to cut the amount of waste they throw into landfill tips.

Lawn Junk Swap Day took place on the green at Guildford Avenue.

Open to all Lawn residents, the event invited people to swap unwanted belongings such as books, toys, clothes, small pieces of furniture and other non-hazardous, non-electrical and non-toxic goods.

Not a penny was exchanged throughout the all-day swap as 200 residents rifled through the various items and picked out any bargains they could get their hands on.

Any leftover items were grabbed by Prospect Hospice and a local charity shop.

Also on display was information on local recycling facilities, real nappies, composting and other ways of reducing waste.

Catherine Rice, project officer at Wiltshire Agenda 21, which supported the event, said: Popular items included books, games, household crockery, flower pots and bikes.

But even garden furniture, a dressing table, sideboard and rabbit hutch were snapped up quickly.

The day was organised by the Lawn Community Association with support from Swindon Council.
