CRICKET: IN another closely fought match, Wiltshire failed by just 15 runs to reach the total set by Dorset.

Electing to bat, Dorset were restricted to 38 runs for two in the first 18 overs due to some fine bowling by skipper John Waterman (South Wilts), who took two wickets for 18 runs from nine overs, and Des Jeffery (South Newton), who bowled nine overs for 15 runs.

Dorset quickened the pace, partly helped by some fielding lapses and missed chances by Wiltshire. Before being dismissed for 51, Mike Wilkinson benefited several times from these slips. The rate was restricted later in the innings by a steady spell by Geoff Osborne, who finished with three for 45 from his nine overs.

Chasing 173 to win, Wiltshire got away to a good start with Keith Redding (Salisbury Wanderers) making 32 and Peter Hagelthorn 22. The scoring rate then dropped until Gwyn Blenkinsop (Farley) 40 and James Ridge (Malmesbury) 12 recovered the momentum. Wickets kept falling and Wiltshire ended at 158 for nine.

The next match is against Channel Isles at South Wilts on July 18.

This will leave one remaining friendly match to be played against Westbury during their cricket week on July 26. This will provide an opportunity for aspiring players who will reach the qualifying age for next season's competition to play.
