A CURFEW banning more than 700 soldiers from Warminster and Westbury town centres in the evening has been lifted after 10 days.

Soldiers from the 1st Battalion The Green Howards, based at Battlesbury Barracks, were banned after a string of incidents in the towns caused tension between soldiers and townspeople.

But the ban has been lifted, allowing them back into the town centres, although they are still banned from Reflections and Oscars 2000 nightclubs

Capt Jonathan Aisbett believes the soldiers have learned their lesson and the time was right for the ban to be lifted.

The weekend was very quiet with no trouble at all. The ban seems to have been very effective and lessons have been learned.

He added: The ban did cause hardship across the board as it makes shopping difficult and it disrupts the whole family in some cases.

Opinion on the ban being lifted has been mixed with some people still feeling that it should have been longer.

Simon Alder, landlord of The Old Bell Hotel, believes soldiers' behaviour will improve after the curfew.
