AFTER months, and even years, of demoralising uncertainty about their jobs, Swindon Rover workers are faced with anxiety all over again.

Today we learn that an estimated 300 will take voluntary redundancy during the coming month.

That's fine for those who really want to go and are getting a satisfactory deal.

But union bosses claim it's likely that hundreds more will follow them out of the factory doors. It's by no means certain that they'll be glad to accept redundancy or have a strong chance of finding alternative jobs.

And it is disgraceful that BMW are staying silent about dates and numbers.

Swindon Rover workers have done everything that the German car giant asked them to do. Their reward initially was to be kept in nervous uncertainty about whether the plant was to be sold along with the rest of the Rover empire or not.

Now that unfair situation is being compounded by BMW's continued reluctance to be frank about their future.

This simply isn't good enough. Rover's loyal Swindon employees, whatever jobs they do within the plant, deserve better than this.

We believe they are still among the best car workers in the world, and it's time for BMW to make up its mind about its plans and be frank with them.

They and their families must not be kept in the dark any longer.
