A NEW heritage and tourist information centre which was opened by the Marquis of Lansdowne has been welcomed by civic chiefs.

The new joint centre in the High Street has been created in Arnold House, the former home of Corsham Town Council. Arnold House originally dates back to the 17th century when it was home to William Arnold, a clothier.

It was given to the town by Joan Pictor, who died in 1959 and pays tribute to the history and development of woollen cloth weaving and quarrying of Bath stone in Corsham.

North Wiltshire District Council, chairman Lynda Barber, paid tribute to the contribution made by tourism officer Angela Powell.

Her enthusiasm and vision is second to none, she said.

The centre will be run by Nicola Tucker and volunteers. Much of the work, which cost £70,000, was done by local firms using Bath stone.

European funding of £23,000 was given to the project with North Wiltshire District Council giving the rest. Corsham Town Council gave Arnold House to the project and the district council is meeting running costs at the moment.
