CROWDS filled Wootton Bassett's traffic-free High Street for a feast of entertainment during the final day of the town's Millennium Festival.

A superb Last Night of the Proms concert by the town's musicians and singers on Saturday, July 3, set the tone for Sunday's spectacular finale.

The celebratory atmosphere began in the morning with a packed festival service which was led by the Rev Bernard Garratt.

Mr Garratt was assisted by Methodist minister the Rev Ann Baldock and the Methodist Music Group.

The Mayor and Mayoress and visitors from the French twin town, Blain, were among those present. St Bartholomew's Church also hosted a magnificent flower festival called Celebration of Christ 2000.

The afternoon of fun was launched at a noon parade, headed by a 1937 fire engine and the Royal British Legion Corps of Drums.

An early performance by male majorettes, the Devizes Major Wrecks, drew hundreds of spectators.

Other entertainers included a stilt-walker, jazz from John Currie's band, a flamenco troupe, the Ellendune Entertainers and Medieval Minstrels.

Carnival queen Rachel Bartlam and attendants Amy Watts and Sophie Lattimer were among many youngsters who took part in the talent competition.
