DEVIZES strike bowler Richard Bedbrook is likely to miss the rest of the season after fracturing and dislocating an index finger a league match with Winsley.

Bedbrook was injured as he attempted to take a catch off his own bowling. He was one of two players to be taken to hospital within the first four overs.

Earlier Winsley opening batsman Owen Vince was struck on the hand by a Paul Vooght bouncer

With no 12th man, Devizes were forced to field with only ten players as the visitors took advantage, both John Spencer and Rob Cross finding the gaps as Devizes produced a lacklustre bowling and fielding display.

With the score on 98 for the loss of Cross for 20, a Winsley score in access of 200 looked on the cards but with Shiv Singh collecting the wicket of skipper Spencer for 45, Devizes clicked into higher gear and, with Andy Hodder making a welcome return to the first team by collecting four for 45 runs, backed up by Shiv with two wickets for only 24 runs, Paul Vooght, with 1 for 47, and Phil Laycock, 1 for 7, Winsley were restricted to of 164 for 9.

In reply, the usual steady start by Paul Stobbard and Mark Colyer took the score to 31 when Stobbart was unlucky to be adjudged leg before for nine. Colyer never looked at his best, taking the score up to 69 before a Cross yorker removed his off stump.

Shiv Singh was joined at the crease by Simon Whatling and the pair took the game Devizes' way with some powerful hitting. With the run rate on above five an over, the two batsmen seemed to be cruising to victory, but with the score on 126 the introduction of Potter saw a tumble of wickets.

After scoring his maiden league 50 Shiv became a little over enthusiastic to finish the match and was stumped for an excellent 51.

With Paul Vooght falling in the same over, and two overs later Whatling following the same way as Shiv for a impressive 43, the Winsley attack smelt victory. The pressure was beginning to build, but Hodder cracked two fours in the 31st over and Devizes sealed a hard fought victory.

This was a less than impressive victory for Devizes, who seemed to cruise through the match in first gear but still managed 20 points which should take them to second place in the table.

Devizes travel to Winterbourne on Saturday, July 8.
