No point to curfew

ON Monday June 26 2000, the Countryside and Rights of Way Bill received its second reading in the House of Lords.

As a keen walker I am concerned at the ideal of putting a night-time curfew on walking on the new open access land.

The bill will enable people to enjoy more of the countryside. The argument about damaging the countryside by more people walking is wrong, the bill won't get everyone out walking, it will just spread everyone out.

I believe there is no point in this curfew, as the criminal element won't be stopped by a curfew, but the risk of a honest member of the public coming round the corner could deter them.

If the National Trust has no problem in night access after the years they have allowed it on their land, there shouldn't be a need for a curfew.

The argument that night access would lead to more accidents is rubbish, talking from experience of taking youngsters walking at night.

The curfew will only restrict where accidents happen, not stop them.
