GOLF: TEENAGER Ryan Smith has won the Erlestoke Sands Club Championship.

The 15-year-old seven handicapper was tied with Mike Corr at the end of 36 holes and won on the third extra hole of a sudden death play off.

Corr had broken the course record in the afternoon with a round of 71.

On the first extra hole in the sudden death play off, Smith produced a superb approach from a bunkered tee shot and then two putted to match Corr's par four. On the second, a par three hole, Smith sank a 15-foot put to keep the match alive.

The pair then played back down the 18th, a par four. Although Corr had the edge with his drive, he was unable to match Smith, who finally stroked in a three foot put for par and the title.

Smith is the first junior member to be club champion.

The winner of the nett shield was Wayne Hemmens (nine handicap), who carded a 10 under par for the two rounds.

At the presentation club captain Jim Thomas commended all players on the relatively low scores and emphasised the maturity shown by Smith, who kept his head in the sudden death play off.

The Ladies' Invitation Day was won by Dorothy Rendall and Roz Thompson with 70 points. Molly Johnson and Judith Fuxwell (69) were second on countback from third placed Pam Geiger and Sue Dix 69 pts.

A record 26 couples entered the Summer Mixed Bowl, a stableford greensome. Stella Jones and George Nicholson won with 37 points, with Stephanie and Malcolm Jones (36) in second place on countback from Linda Kavanagh and Vince Gaiger and Sandra and Ben Armit.
