CAMPAIGNERS have vowed to fight on in a bid to prevent 600 homes being built in Corsham.

Protesters arrived in force to lobby North Wiltshire District Council who had been asked to make the decision on the major housing project at its meeting on Tuesday night (July 4).

The Ministry of Defence with Bryant Homes and Persimmon Homes made the application for the 600-house development at Pockeredge Farm and Peel Circus.

They have offered to provide £252,000 towards the cost of Corsham's new railway station.

Planning officers have asked to be given the authority to thrash out remaining planning issues. But councillors decided to put off the decision until they had all had the chance to see the site for themselves.

Cllr Toby Sturgis said: All members should have a site plan and relevant information from the local and structure plans. It is absolutely appalling we have been asked tonight to make a decision when only the local members know the site well.

People opposing the scheme for Pockeredge Farm and Peel Circus say there are not the facilities to support it.

Local resident Patrick Gulliford told the meeting the development could result in a 15 per cent rise in the population of the town.

After the meeting protester David Bowen-Jones of Cross Keys in Corsham said: We will have an uprising.

We can't have the bureaucrats demolishing local democracy. They tell us refusal is not an option, but this is a wimpish attitude by certain councillors. I will block the A4 and burn tyres if I have to.
