YOUNG people across the county have been given food for thought at a festival which aims to promote caring for the environment.

Festival 3000, organised by Kandu Arts for Sustainable Development, opened at Lacock Abbey on Monday, with secondary schools in the area taking part in a variety of workshops based on the theme of sustainability.

The grounds took on a native American feel as tepees were put up and groups of youngsters took advantage of the fine weather by working outside and in a marquee.

Students from Malmesbury, Hardenhuish, Sheldon, John Bentley, George Ward and Corsham schools have been taking part in the workshops using sound, music, drama and animation.

Phil Tarry, 14, from Malmesbury School, said: If we don't start acting on pollution we're going to have to move out and go and live in outer space.

Another pupil, Jenny Jones, 13, said: If we don't do something to make the country cleaner it's all going to be one big tip.
