A PRIMARY school has been forced to improve security measures after an angry parent swore at a teacher.

Andrew Matthews, headteacher of Bowerhill Primary School in Melksham, has been forced to make changes at his school after several parents and pupils witnessed an angry parent hurling abuse at a teacher through a classroom window.

Mr Matthews said: This was an extreme case. We are very lucky to enjoy excellent support from our parents and this incident was a one-off and it was upsetting and disappointing.

Police were called to the school and officers talked to the children and also to the parent involved in the incident.

Mr Matthews confirmed the school would be looking closely at new security measures and access to the school buildings and he promised that over the next months a number of changes would be made.

All parents have been alerted to the incident through the school newsletter.

In it, Mr Matthews said: It is a sad sign of the times that school funds have to be diverted to protect staff and pupils from the poor behaviour of a small minority of adults.

More than 1,000 headteachers and staff across the county have been taking part in a survey on violence in schools.
