MOTOR racing enthusiasts took up a golden opportunity when Castle Combe race track hosted its 50th anniversary.

It was Formula 500 to Formula One as the sights and sounds from the past five decades of racing were relived as Combe played host to almost every type of racing car which once competed on the former wartime airfield.

Among the attractions was the ERA 1938 Brooklands race car, famous for its success in the Formula Libre races in the early fifties at the Wiltshire track when it beat the legendary BRM.

Making a return to the track in a demonstration parade was the D-type Jaguar, considered by many to be Jaguar's most stylish car and one of the most successful sports cars ever built. This particular car raced in 1955 at Combe.

One top driver made a nostalgic return to the circuit. Vince Woodman from Bristol was a well known name in motor racing circles in the mid 60s when he raced his Lotus Cortina.

Vince made a return to the track driving a Ferrari F40, and brought a 464bhp Ford Cologne Capri to put on show at the display.

He said This is a very nostalgic day for many seeing a line up of the famous cars from past years. It's an excellent way of helping Castle Combe celebrate its golden anniversary.

A whole range of Formula 500 cars took to the track in a special anniversary parade, and in contrast, one of the most modern cars, the Formula One Jaguar R1, took part.
