A TELEPHONE company's plan for a 60 foot mobile phone mast next to the M4 motorway has been thrown out by North Wilts District Council.

The plan for a green mast at Park Farm in Lydiard Tregoz was refused at a meeting on Wednesday, July 5, because the council feels there is no real need for it.

Vodaphone put in the application for a new mast to try and deal with the increasing phone use of drivers on the motorway.

At the moment, there are two masts trying to cope with the amount of phone usage, but they are unable to handle the number of calls made.

Vodaphone said that the application for the Park Farm site is the only viable option to cope with increasing demand. But North Wilts Council believe there are several alternatives and want the mobile phone company to comment further.

Head of development control David Auld said: Even with the backdrop of large trees this new mast will be a further jarring intrusion into open countryside detrimental to its appearance.
