SWINDON'S Lethbridge School achieved an impressive fifth place in the national finals of the English Primary Schools Chess Championships.
As one of just two state schools among the eight finalists, they demonstrated that chess ability is not confined to the independent sector, where chess is often part of the curriculum.
The finals, held over two days at the independent Oakham School, Rutland, which offers chess scholarships to promising young players, pitted the winners and runners-up from each of four semi-finals held in June.
Ten-year-old Daniel Hall continued his good form by winning three of his five games on top board after his victorious two out of two for England Under 10s against Wales.
Teammate Alastair Drew, on board three, did even better, winning two and drawing three games to finish unbeaten in the competition.
Adam Wiltshire, nine, 11-year-olds Joshua Saunders and Dominic O'Brien and reserve Ted Gray, nine, completed the team.
