DUNNINGHAM'S bakery was swamped with customers eager to snap up exotic treats from crocodile buns to kangaroo sandwiches.

Joint owner of the Wood Street shop, Greg Dunningham, said hundreds of people wanted to get their hands on the wild delights, which also included ostrich, red deer, pheasant and wild boar.

He will continue selling the meats temporarily and if the response from customers is still as popular, he will consider making them a permanent fixture on the menu.

The snag is that a leg of crocodile or kangaroo has to be shipped in by a specialist importer, costing around five times the price of fillet steak.

Mr Dunningham had to order eight of the crocodile legs at £90 a joint, but despite paying similar prices for the other meats and selling each sandwich for £3, he claims he broke even on the day.

The shop already boasts an range of more than 200 different sandwich fillings but the staff wanted to try something a little more exotic.

We ran out of ideas using traditional foods, so we took a gamble on this and the response has been unbelievable, said Mr Dunningham.

I'm so chuffed we did it I think the next things we'll try are rattlesnake and emu.
