CHERHILL'S project to create a thatched roof bus shelter to mark the Millennium will start this weekend.

During the first phase of the project, the old bus shelter on the A4 outside the village will be removed and a new base put in for the thatched one.

The Cherhill Millennium Project's funds now stand at £7,500 following many events to raise money, most recently the village fayre and teddy bear's picnic and a sponsored duck and raft race. But fundraising continues to raise the money needed to put the final touches to the bus shelter, including seating and a base which will house a village time capsule.

Millennium committee member Tina Jeary said: "We would like to thank all those who have supported us this far, in particular those who have contributed substantial sums by way of individual gifts. Although we still need to raise more money, we can now get the project under way."

It is hoped to find a temporary shelter to cover the few weeks it will take for the wooden structure to be put in place and for the thatched roof to be completed.
