FIREFIGHTERS in Wiltshire have joined the national effort to raise money for the families of their American colleagues who died trying to help the victims of terrorism.

The appeal was launched on Friday September 21 and has the backing of shops and the Wiltshire Times.

Assistant Divisional Officer Steve Law said: "The appeal has been inspired by the firefighters who have felt moved by the devastation that has occurred in New York.

"We have received an overwhelming reaction from every organisation we have approached and people are keen to show their support."

Trowbridge Town Council is also behind the appeal. Mayor Jeff Osborn said: "There is a bond of comradeship between all the firefighters, internationally. I was honoured to be there for the three minutes' silence organised by the Fire Brigade in Trowbridge which involved the community. The town council is 100 per cent behind their appeal."

Supermarkets and shops backing the collection include: Trowbridge: Tesco, Asda and Budgens; Bradford on Avon: Budgens; Melksham: Leekes and Sainsburys; Westbury: Coopers; Warminster: Safeway; Corsham: Somerfield; supermarkets in Chippenham are also taking part.

Cheques can be sent to Fire Brigade HQ, Manor House, Potterne, SN10 5PP, made payable to the Wiltshire Fire Brigade Firefighters Appeal. Firefighters will also be collecting in town centres across the county.
