AGE Concern Swindon has praised South Swindon MP Julia Drown for her decision to support the Age Equality Commission Bill when it receives its second reading on Friday, November 23.

The proposed Age Equality Commission would be a new body to monitor existing and future legislation, and would also advise business, public and voluntary sectors on issues relating to age discrim-ination.

It is jointly supported by Age Concern, the Association of Retired Persons Over 50 and Help the Aged.

Ms Drown has joined the campaign to combat age discrimination by commit-ting to vote in favour of the Private Members Bill.

Jo Osorio, director of Age Concern Swindon, said: "No-one should suffer economic or social exclusion on the ground of age. Julia Drown's decision is to be applauded."

The Bill was introduced by Labour MP Candy Atherton when she heard that a 70 year-old fully qualified vet in Cornwall was deemed too old to help in the foot and mouth crisis, despite shortages of skilled vets.
