FIRE crews blocked off two lanes of the M4 near Membury services on Tuesday after a lorry carrying 24 tonnes of highly explosive ethanol was involved in a crash.

A second lorry careered into the back of the Leyland Daff articulated lorry on the westbound carriageway between the service station and junction 15 at 6.24am.

There was no spillage on the carriageway but two lanes were cordoned off as a precaution, causing tailbacks on the westbound carriageway towards junction 14.

Two firefighting appliances and a Chemical Incident Unit were dealt with the incident, while ambulance crews were put on stand-by.

No one was injured but a female lorry driver needed to be treated for shock.
