A MUCH improved display helped Wootton Bassett to a deserved win at struggling Almondsbury Town on Saturday 10 November.

The visitors were forced to soak up early pressure and could have gone in front on 27 minutes when Jack Dodds shot straight at goalkeeper Mason after being sent clear by Mark Vaughan.

Bassett were rewarded for some fine football on the stroke of half-time when a superb cross-field ball from Vaughan found Richard Merchant and his shot gave Mason no chance.

The hosts went in search of an equaliser early in the second period and Paul Patel was on hand to clear off the line following a string of corners.

Bassett regrouped and went two in front when Tony Macek nodded home at the far post following a five man move midway through the half.

The visitors dominated the final 20 minutes and Merchant was inches from adding his second and Bassett's third late on.

Highworth Town's 2-1 defeat at Yate relegated them to bottom but one in the Premier Division table, and they need to start picking up a few points in the weeks to come or they could find themselves in dire trouble.

Two goals in a five-minute spell by the home side from Dempsey and Bennett gave them an interval lead.

After the break Highworth came out battling and Dave Webb pulled a goal back from the penalty spot five minutes into the half.

Purton, who were without top striker Steve Tucker and central defender Lee Marshall, both suspended, moved into second place in Division One after beating Witney Academy 5-1 at the Red House. Steve Avenall was the Purton hero, chalking up a hat-trick and also having a hand in the second goal scored by Craig Alexander, who aslo scored in the second half.

The Academy scored a consolation when a cross from the right was deflected past his own keeper by Paul Blanchard.

Malmesbury Vics shared the points in a 1-1 draw at Letcombe.
