COMMITTEE members from the Summer Fun in Calne playscheme have taken written to Education Minister Estelle Morris about a lack of financial support for students.

The playscheme, which runs throughout the summer holidays, employs mainly university students who are home in Calne for their holiday break.

Playscheme treasurer Derek Quinn said the students often turned up at work very tired because they were working in two or three jobs to save money for term time.

"Staff are mainly students who need to have two or three jobs to pay off their debts from last year and to accumulate money for the following year," he said.

"They work more hours than they would in full-time employment and probably more hours than allowed by law."

"It was unanimously agreed to write to the Minister of Education highlighting yet another problem caused by the current underfunding of university education."

Mr Quinn said many of the student staff had left this year after two or three years because they had finished their studies and were going into full-time employment.

He thanked them for all their hard work.

The playscheme held its annual meeting at the Lansdowne Hotel last week when committee members and supporters celebrated a successful fifth year.
