PEOPLE in the north of Calne are being urged to show their support for a potential new community centre and give the plans the best chance of going ahead.

The town council is in discussions with developer Persimmon, which is responsible for building the majority of the new houses off the northern bypass, about building the facility on land near Beversbrook Road.

It would be largely aimed at the hundreds of new residents who have moved into Calne since the houses were built.

Calne's community development manager Mark Wilkins said: "There is an opportunity for a community centre to be built but we need to get a commitment from potential users and people who would want to volunteer their time towards running it.

"At the moment a steering group has been established to drive this forward.

"If it goes ahead we plan to work with Persimmon, which will put funding towards it."

A public meeting is being held at Fynamore School on December 3, and anyone interested in showing their support for the idea is invited to go along.

"It is really important to motivate residents and make sure we get some commitment from them to ensure the project moves forward," said Mr Wilkins.

"There has been a lot of public consultation about this and there seems to be a big demand for a community centre there. Being on the north side of town where a lot of new houses are going up, those residents will be the main users.

"But this is not exclusively for them," he added.
