TOWN and village centres across Salisbury District fell silent on Sunday as people gathered to remember the dead of two world wars and other conflicts.
On a bright but chilly Remembrance Sunday, wreaths were laid at memorials in Salisbury, Wilton, Amesbury, Downton, Tisbury, Mere, Durrington and dozens of other villages.
In Salisbury, the Wessex Military Band led a parade of Royal British Legion members - including Salisbury branch chairman Peter Douglas and president Jeff Coombes and women's section president Pat Childs, representatives of the armed forces, police, fire and ambulance services, cadets and scouts and the Patriots Motorcycle Club.
They were joined for the wreath-laying at the memorial by Mayor of Salisbury Ian Tomes, chairman of Salisbury District Council Andy Young, MP Robert Key, chairman of Wiltshire County Council Julian Johnson and other dignitaries.
In Wilton, Mayor Bob Blandford, garrison commander Brig Nigel Philpott and Royal British Legion representative Brig Harry Thompson led the wreath-laying.
In Amesbury, the Rev Peter Lewis read the names of the fallen before wreaths were laid at the memorial in St Mary and St Melor Churchyard.
Royal British Legion Amesbury branch chairman Bob Jackson and Mayor John Turner led the ceremony, and Amesbury Town Band and Shrewton Silver Band provided the accompaniment.
