BEING an exiled Cornishman, I have read with interest the comments made with regard to the possibility of a statue to Merlin.

I find it quite incredible that this idea has even been suggested.

It is sad that in this Harry Potter age that we are living, someone of, I hope, above average intelligence had the audacity to suggest commemorating a wizard of Arthurian legend.

If this scheme sees the light of day my assumption of the intelligence that runs our councils will be confirmed.

Take the trip to the north Cornwall village of Tintagel and marvel at the setting of the ruins of Arthur's castle, and then wander through the truly awful cheapness that is Tintagel village and marvel again at the Arthurian tat.

And after lunching on a proper Cornish pasty, take a trip to Dozmary Pool, where Excalibur rests, you will realize that Marlborough should really cast in bronze, a dignitary of Marlborough origin, not a character from long ago fables and legends.

Better still, plant some trees or provide more seating areas in the town or park areas. Debate the issue more please before you spend funds on nonsense.
