An outstanding car at the Scottish Show was Fiat's all-new mid-size three and five-door hatchback, the Stilo.

Going on sale in mainland Europe shortly, it is designed in-house by Fiat.

The interior can be adapted to changing individual needs because the front passenger seat tilts forward, and the rear seats slide, recline and tilt independently.

By contrast, the three-door version is altogether a sportier car.

Both versions enjoy safety equipment, including up to eight airbags, six of which are standard equipment.

There are disc brakes on all four wheels, and ABS anti-lock braking as standard.

The Stilo range goes on sale with four petrol engine options, together with two common rail direct injection turbodiesel engines, ranging from 80-170 bhp, driving through five or six-speed gearboxes, and a Selespeed sequential transmission.

A carefully refined suspension works in conjunction with a sophisticated rear configuration to offer driving precision and outstanding roadholding.

The Stilo is unique within its segment in offering up to eight airbags, two of which (the front airbags) are multi-stage.

The new model has disc brakes all round and the latest braking and traction control systems.

Optional equipment will make it possible for the driver to unlock the car and start it without a key.

When Stilo enters a tunnel, its headlamps will be switched on automatically upon the instructions of a sensor.

And then the first raindrops of a sudden shower will activate the windscreen wipers via a rain sensor.

Parking manoeuvres can also be facilitated by a parking sensor.

The rear of the five-door's passenger compartment can be adapted to alter legroom and backrest position for maximum occupant comfort.

Remote control central locking incorporates deadlocks, the electric front windows incorporate an obstruction sensor, and electric door mirrors are painted the same shade as the body, and heated.

Right-hand drive versions of the Stilo go on sale in the UK early next year with prices closer to launch.
