The Peugeot 307 is now available with a powerful, 110 bhp HDi turbo diesel engine and the option of an automatic gearbox on 1.6 litre and 2.0 litre petrol engine models.

And, in a further move to con-solidate its class-leading position on safety, the 307 is now also available with ESP the dynamic stability control system.

To meet the differing demands of the wide spectrum of motorists, the 307 is offered with six engine options: three petrol, and three diesel.

The new 2.0 litre HDi turbo diesel 110 bhp unit produces 110 bhp at 4000 rpm.

Yet it is still very fuel-efficient, returning 54.3 mpg on the official combined cycle.

From an important environmental standpoint, the engine also incorpor-ates a particulate exhaust filter.

First seen on the Peugeot 607, this traps and burns off 95 per cent of carbon and hydrocarbon particles to virtually eliminate environmental effects.

This engine delivers delivers a lively and flexible response in all five gears, 62 mph comes up in 10.9 seconds (three-door version) from a standing start, with a top speed of 119 mph.

For those who prefer to drive an automatic, Peugeot now has an electronically controlled, Porsche Tiptronic System gearbox as an option on current 1.6 and 2.0 litre petrol models. This AL4 autoactive gearbox has four forward gears.

The electronic management of gear selection takes into account driving style, road surface, vehicle load and temperature.

It provides either fully automatic use with conventional functions park, reverse, neutral and drive or sequential control to deliver clutch-less manual selection.

There are also two locked pro-grammes for sporty driving, or for when there's snow and ice on the road.

Notably, Peugeot engineers have achieved a level of operation and reduced internal friction and drag to provide fuel consumption figures close to the annual gearbox equiv-alent.

The new 307 already gives motorists exceptional levels of active and passive safety.

In addition to a comprehensive list of safety features, including six air bags driver, front seat passenger, side and 'drop down' curtain airbags, the dynamic stability control system is now available on certain models.

The car is one of the first cars to feature the new Bosch 5.7 ESP system.

It not only manages and improves the car's existing anti-lock braking and electronic brake force distributor systems, but also adds two important new safety features.

These are traction control, and dynamic stability control helping the 307 to achieve new levels of driving safety in extreme situations.

Prices for the Peugeot 307 with automatic transmission start at £13,510 for the LX auto 1.6 16v and includes three years' of warranty cover.
