MOTORISTS are being asked to be tolerant while gas pipeline company Transco replaces a gas main in Chippenham.

The ten-week, £90,000 project at Bumpers Way on the Bumpers Farm Industrial Estate involves replacing the old metal pipe with a plastic one.

Work started on Monday and motorists are being warned of long delays.

The new pipe will help guarantee gas supplies to Chippenham in forthcoming winters and cut down on maintenance work, said a Transco spokesman.

Transco project manager Derek Vaughan said: "We would like to apologise for any inconvenience this essential safety work may cause. We will be using traffic lights throughout the project to help keep traffic flowing."

Morrison Construction Ltd is carrying out the work on Transco's behalf.

Wiltshire County Council was alerted to the work back in March. A spokesman said: "They have done everything they have to do and a little bit more."

Motorists in Chippenham ground to halt last month after traffic warden Duncan Wostenholme switched off the traffic lights at the junction of Gladstone Road and Avenue La Fleche.

The tailbacks started when roadworks closed two of the three lanes of Avenue La Fleche.
