STUDENT Lee Beedie is demanding the district council pay up after £200 damage was caused to his first car by a new security system at a Chippenham car park.

It happened on Tuesday when Mr Beedie, 18, of Forest Gate, Pewsham, drove his Mini Metro over ramps at the entrance to the underground car park at the Emery Gate shopping centre.

He says new spikes attached to the ramp ripped off the exhaust and damaged the fuel tank.

His mother Maritza, who was with her son at the time, said: "I cannot tell you how angry I was. Lee now faces a £200 bill and we will be making sure the council pay."

Two weeks ago North Wiltshire District Council, which owns the car park, installed the ramps with a row of flexible spikes to stop people using the entrance to the car park as an exit.

A spokesman for the council said was investigating a report of damage to a car, but believed the system was working efficiently.

However, Bathwick Tyres, in Chippenham, said it had seen three other cars with similar damage.

Mrs Beedie said: "Lee is gutted. This is his first car and he can only just afford to run it."
