IT is a pleasure to report some more positive news following the theft of 40 newly planted saplings from Crowdys Hill School.

It is bewildering why anyone would want to steal trees from a special needs school in the first place.

But it seems that the public imagination has been captured by the story and the school's phone has barely stopped ringing with offers of help, from firms wanting to replace all of the trees to individuals offering saplings grown in their back garden.

Faith in human nature restored, let us hope those who stole the trees in the first place feel suitably ashamed.
