NOISY roofs and thin walls are two of the problems that have affected the opening weeks of the new Malmesbury School, but headteacher Malcolm Trobe said the problems are getting sorted out.

The school, in Corn Gastons, opened at Easter and is part of a £60m 30-year private finance initiative.

It replaced the split sites at Corn Gastons and Filands, but Mr Trobe said there have already been problems.

He has been meeting regularly with builders Bilfinger and Berger, and the next meeting is scheduled for next week.

But, despite some teething problems, he said there had not been as many difficulties as anticipated, and the glitches were expected in a building that size.

"The initial snag list had 28 complaints, but we would usually expect about 100 on a building this size," said Mr Trobe.

"There is an issue with noise in one or two areas of the school, particularly in the gym where there is a suspended ceiling.

"But, after all, what the youngsters have got is a brand new school with facilities that are far, far better than in the old school."

He said a system has been set up for pupils and teachers to log complaints.

Liz Allsopp, a spokesman for Group 4, which will run the facilities at the school, said the firm had not been aware of any noise problems reported at Malmesbury School.

A spokesman for Wiltshire County Council said: "The schools and the contractors are resolving any outstanding issues.

"We have regular meetings and any issues that the schools have will be raised."
