POPULAR Wootton Bassett GP Dr Bill Bliss, received an unusual retirement gift on Friday a classic car.

The 1973 Humber Sceptre, was in immaculate condition, complete with MoT

Dr Bliss, who has a passion for restoring and driving classic cars, said: "I can't believe it. This is brilliant."

At a farewell party, Dr Bliss of New Court Surgery, who has worked in the town for more than 28 years, was praised for his constant kindness, commitment and skill.

"I feel so privileged and happy to have worked with him and so sad that he is going. We all love him to pieces," said Dr Mary Valentine.

Dr Nick Yerbury told guests: "He will be greatly missed in all areas except one computers have not been Bill."

Dr Bliss, said: "I'm overwhelmed by everyone's generosity and good wishes."

He admitted a slight feeling of cold feet, as retirement loomed.

"It's a major life changing event, like getting married, and you go into it voluntarily, knowing that life is going to be different," he said.

"To begin with, I am just going to put my feet up and relax. That will be a change, after being used to working a 10 to 12 hour day, and nights and weekends. But I'm sure I will find lots of things to keep me occupied."

He plans a weekend in Budapest with the Wagner Society, and he looks forward to indulging his fondness for classic cars.

His son Edward and his Italian fiancee, are also due to marry this summer.
