PEWSEY Vale all but guaranteed the second promotion spot in the Hellenic League Division One West with a comfortable win over local rivals Shrivenham at the Recreation Ground on Tuesday night.

Don Rogers' side are now three points clear of third placed Ardley United, who they face in the last game of the season.

Pewsey's goal difference is 14 goals better than the Oxfordshire side, but a point against Old Woodstock tonight would banish any doubts and send Rogers' men into the Premier Division.

The home side made a cautious start but a scrappy 14th minute goal from Tony Dyer settled their nerves.

Ross Anderson sent over a fine cross from the left which was fumbled by Shrivenham goalkeeper Chris Wood, and captain Dyer shot through a clutch of bodies and into the net.

The wet conditions were making for a poor spectacle, and Pewsey could not add to their lead in the first half despite creating a number of decent openings in front of goal.

Wood foiled Mark Stevens on 63 minutes following an inch-perfect cross from Warwick Burnett, but Pewsey doubled their lead five minutes later.

The visiting goalkeeper failed to hold Mick McNally's shot from the edge of the area and the ball fell to Tom Ritchie, who shot home from an acute angle to put Pewsey two in front.

McNally then saw a shot drift wide of Wood's goal, before Brian Wood saw a fine effort tipped over for a corner.

Wood was again foiled by his namesake in the Shrivenham goal before Pewsey made sure of the points and second spot in the table a minute from time.

McNally was again the creator as his 30-yard free kick found defender Martin Churchward inside the area, and his far post header sailed over Wood to wrap up a memorable win.

Rogers said: "It was comfortable in the end. I don't think Shrivenham even looked like scoring and it was more a case of how many we'd score ourselves.

"We got better as the game went on and the pleasing thing was the way we defended. The goal Tony Dyer scored was the luckiest thing you'll ever see and set us on our way.

"But we haven't had much luck this season and we were due a bit on Tuesday night."

Pewsey will be at full strength for tonight's clash against Old Woodstock, who defeated the Wiltshire side 4-1 on the opening day of the campaign.
