WOOTTON Bassett were responsible for the shock of the day in the Hellenic Premier Division, when they held leaders Gloucester United to a 1-1 draw on their own ground.

The scoreline could have been far worse for the home side, who equalised in the 94th minute.

The result completed a good week for the Wiltshire side, who had beaten Highworth Town 3-2 in midweek, and ensured another season in the Premier Division, moving them out of the bottom four.

After a goalless first half, Bassett scored in the 77th minute when Pete Carhill's free kick was met by Kevin Theobald, who headed into the net.

With a Bassett victory looking certain, the game drifted into injury time and in the 94th minute the ball fell to Ross Casey in a crowded goalmouth and the United forward turned and shot home.

Midweek results had put Gloucester United in pole position with a game in hand over rivals North Leigh.

However, the dropped points now put their rivals in the driving seat with United having to win both remaining games at Highworth on Monday and at home to Abingdon United on Wednesday. North Leigh made sure of three points with a 2-0 win over visitors Fairford Town.

Bott scored from the penalty spot after 22 minutes, and McCabe added a second one minute after the start of the second half.

It was the Cinder Lane side's last game of the season and manager Mark Webb must have been pleased with his side's efforts, finishing in the top six.

Purton attracted a large crowd at the Red House for their game against league leaders Hook Norton, but failed to make any impression on the leaders, who ran out 2-0 winners.

The home side were without their top striker Steve Tucker, who failed a last minute fitness test, and then promptly found themselves a goal down after just four minutes from a header by Greg Shawyer.

Purton never really recovered from the early goal, and looked slightly ragged against a lively Hook side.

Five minutes before the break, some sloppy defending by the home side allowed Shawyer to score his second, and give his side a two goal cushion at the break.

After the interval, Purton looked a different side, and they could well have pulled a couple of goals back from Steve Avenell who had a good effort hit the post.

Ben Parsons also struck the bar from a corner, and a 25 yard free kick by Michael Sylvanus bent around the Hook wall and hit the post.

Despite a much better second half performance, they failed to find the net and victory for Hook Norton gave them the Division One West title and promotion to the Premier Division.

Malmesbury Vics clambered out of the bottom four with a 3-0 victory over Ross Town, Ledgister netting twice in the first half, and Halliwell adding a third ten minutes from time.

Shrivenham visiting Kidlington, shared the points in a no score draw.

Highworth Town returned to form in some style in the Hellenic Premier Division on Monday night.

John Fisher's side had been struggling of late after an initial resurgence under his stewardship. But the Highworth troops bounced back to claim maximum points with a stunning 5-2 home win over second-placed Gloucester United.
