VOTERS were up bright and early today as the polls for the council elections opened at 8am.
And among them was Swindon's resident loony Roly Gillard.
He was one of the first to cast his vote in the Eastcott ward, where he is standing against Liberal Democrat leader Mike Evemy.
Wearing his rock and roll outfit, Roly said he enjoyed election day and hoped there would be a decent turn out from electors.
He said: "Everybody should get out to vote because it affects us all. You should put up or shut up.
"We all need to sort out the mess in education I propose making the Beano compulsory in schools and getting rid of Shakespeare."
A third of the council's 59 seats are up for grabs this year.
The current council makeup is Labour 29, Conservatives 22 and Liberal Democrats eight, with the minority Conservatives in power since October after a no confidence vote in the then Labour administration.
Voters have until 9pm tonight to cast their vote.
