STAFF and pupils at Hilmarton School are celebrating after winning a Government award for improving standards.

Headteacher Stephen Luke said he was delighted and paid tribute to the efforts of staff and pupils.

"There has been a lot of hard work to do over the last three years," he said. "We were very pleased with how things were going anyway and could see we were making progress but the award proves it is not just our perception but those with a far broader picture can see how things have improved."

The school was recognised for the substantial improvements made between the 1998 SATS results and the results in 2001.

The school received a certificate and a cash boost. The board of governors will decide where the money will be spent.

"The school did not have particularly good standards around 1998 and I am delighted we have been able to improve things here," said Mr Luke, who took over as headteacher at Easter 1999. "It is a good school and one we where we have all worked very hard."
