THE pupils will be doing the teaching at John Bentley School when foreign students arrive to study English in June.

Sixth form language students are to receive instruction in teaching English as a foreign language before giving conversation classes to the mainly French-speaking youngsters when they visit the town.

The exchange is being organised jointly by John Bentley School and local language study holiday company Belaf.

"Our students will get a greater awareness of the French culture and language," said Gordon Trafford, deputy head of the school, a specialist language college.

The visiting students, aged from 11-15 will stay with pupil's families and join in their lessons, in addition to having the extra conversation classes.

Mr Trafford added that the conversation classes would give a valuable head start to the school's pupils who are interested in a career in teaching.

This is the first year that the course has been offered, but the school hopes that it will grow year on year.

Several families have already offered to host the foreign guests, but more are still needed.

Belaf director Tim Browne says the benefits of playing host to a foreign child are enormous, and lasting friendships are formed.

"Receiving a foreign child can really broaden a family's horizons," he said.
