Swindon Supermarine boss John Murphy has played down his chances of scooping the Dr Martens Western Division manager of the year.

After leading Marine's stunning revival, many respected non league names have tipped Murphy for honours at the Dr Martens annual awards on June 8.

It wouldn't be the first time Murphy has collected the award, but the Hunts Copse boss doesn't rate his chances.

"I've won the Dr Martens manager of the year award with Cheltenham in the Western and Premier, and Trowbridge in the Eastern all championship winning teams.

"To win it in this fashion would be on a par with that, but I don't think that will happen.

"The league always give the award to the manager of the champions, so Brendan Phillips will win it."

Phillips has led Halesowen to an immediate return to the Premier Division albeit on a huge budget.

The Halesowen boss is odds-on favourite for an award at the ceremony in Torquay, but Murphy is an outsider along with local rival Chippenham's Tommy Saunders.

And Murphy believes that Bluebirds' boss Saunders is more deserving of the accolade than anyone.

Murphy said: "Personally, I would give it to Tommy Saunders.

"I thought Chippenham were the strongest side I saw all season, and to come straight up from the Screwfix League and get promotion at the first time of asking is a heck of an achievement."

Meanwhile, Murphy has drawn up a list of seven players he would like to bring in as he looks to build a squad capable of holding it's own in the Western Division next term.

Fuelforce's recent £50,000 cash injection should give Murphy the kind of spending power needed to draft in his targets.

Highworth's Warren Fuller heads the Hunts Copse wish list.

Murphy watched the striker grab two goals during Highworth's 5-2 win over Gloucester United on Monday, and left the Rec suitably impressed.

"I've watched Warren Fuller several times, and I believe that he could make the step up to the Dr Martens quite comfortably," said the Marine boss. "He seems quite loyal to Highworth, but he is one of several players I'd like to bring in."

As well as Fuller, Murphy may renew his interest in Gloucester United's Ross Casey a player he chased earlier this year.
