LONDON Road, Devizes, was blocked for two hours on Monday morning after a gust of wind blew over a farm trailer loaded with tonnes of straw.

The trailer lost its load on the Cannings Hill roundabout, sending 40 huge bales of straw across the main A361 junction with Horton Avenue.

Tractor driver Glenn Elliott, 30, was taking his load of straw from Etchilhampton to Home Farm at Bulkington when the accident happened. A Devizes police spokesman said there was no suggestionthe load was insecure, and no further action is anticipated.

WPC Julie May, who attended the incident, said: "It was a very windy day and I think that it was just one of those things that happen. The bales were enormous, not the kind you get from pet shops. It was lucky that no other cars were involved. The driver was shaken but otherwise unhurt."

Mr Elliott's father, Ron, who farms at Home Farm, Bulkington, said he was relieved that neither his son nor anyone else was hurt.

He said: "It's a good job it didn't happen in town. It was a gust of wind which came at the same time the load was going round the roundabout. It is unlikely ever to happen again."
