THE Mayor and Mayoress of Marlborough, David and Gillian Watson, have had their year in office commemorated in a unique pottery plaque made by a close friend who lives in Normandy.

The Mayor, whose year of office ends on May 20 when he hands over to Coun Margaret Boulton, remains in contact with Paul Thornhill, with whom he went to school in Ilkeston, in Derbyshire.

Mr Thornhill, who went on to become an arts and crafts teacher, retired some years ago and now lives in Normandy where Coun Watson and his wife visit every year. His skills include pottery.

"When he heard I had been elected mayor of Marlborough he said he would make me a commemorative plate, "Coun Watson said.

The potter was sent a copy of the town coat of arms which he has incorporated on the plaque, together with the words, Dr David Watson, Mayor of Marlborough, April 20 2001.

Coun Watson said he was very proud of the unique memorial to his year in office.

It has now been given pride of place on the wall at his home in Manton.
