PASSING through Swindon last Friday I read Andy Blizzard's article with some interesting ideas for a Swindon disease memorial sculpture. The most imaginative, apparently by an international artist, was immediately rejected by the council leader.

This attitude is where a lot of Swindon's problems lie and which contribute to it being a bit of a national joke. Things always seem to be done 'down to a price rather than up to a standard' and if ever a town could do with a bit of style it is Swindon.

Has Mr Bawden leader of Swindon Borough Council taken the trouble to find out what such a sculpture would cost before rejecting it? And has he investigated what the National Lottery might be prepared to put towards it?

Come on Swindon, raise your sights a bit.
